First Round 1. Virginia vs 16. Gardner-Webb This game will be watched for one big reason: Gardner-Webb beat two ACC teams this season, and are looking to add a third. But for real, Virginia of course lost to UMBC in the 1-16 matchup last year, and they'll be looking to not repeat that this season, and I think they will be coming out very strong. I have been saying for most of the season that I think Virginia is going to beat the 16 seed they play by about 50 points, and they seem like they are going to come out firing. Ty Jerome, Kyle Guy, and De'Andre Hunter are all incredible players, and they all light it up from behind the arc, and their defense should be able to stifle the Runnin' Bulldogs in this game. Season in Review I watched a weird amount of the American Athletic Conference this year, but to be fair, it was really good basketball this year. Former back in 2014 with the remnants of the Big East, it is consistently produced good teams, from Louisville the first year after they won their championship, to SMU, Cincinnati, and Wichita State, the conference has quietly been very good. This was probably it's best season yet, top to bottom, with Houston cracking into the top 10 at one point, and currently has two teams ranked with UCF the first team outside of the top 25. With four teams currently in good position to make the tournament, the American could be well represented in March, but don't sleep on some of the lower seeds. In the last week on regular season play, there is still a ton to play for. Last week was wild, and my rankings got really shaken up. Honestly, I don't even know if these are right, but I think they reflect my views on teams at the moment. One note: there won't be any other conference breakdowns this week, as I will instead be doing conference tournament previews as often as possible a long with some more behind the scenes stuff as we gear up for March. After an action packed opening night, things were a bit calmer in the second night of action. As much as I love watching college basketball, I don't mind the lack of action. It provides some much needed down time, and I know these nights will be far and few between after the season really kicks into gear, so it's good to appreciate them now. What I Saw Michigan State vs Kansas (Champions Classic) - Two big basketball is back at Kansas, and it looks good. The Dedric Lawson and Udoka Azubuike combo looked great, and they will be tough to stop. Lawson actually struggled, going 5-18 from the floor, but got 10 points from the charity stripe. He did contribute with a team high 6 assists and 14 rebounds though, getting a double double in his Jayhawk debut. Buke looked like the star of the front court, with 17 points and 4 blocks in 20 minutes as he battled foul trouble. David McCormack also had flashes, and it figures to be a good season for Bill Self's favorite form of offens...
